All of the chemistry faculty are research-active and many have external grants to support their work. Undergraduates are mentored in the research laboratory during the academic year, including short research stints as part of Winter Term, and for 8-10 weeks during the summer.
Students may be involved in research from September to May as Honors students or as research students. Both groups work about the same hours in the laboratory, but Honors students are required to describe their work in a formal thesis, in two public oral presentations, and in front of a chemist from another institution (oral exam).
Summer research assistants receive stipends and valuable experience for their full-time pursuits.
