Educational Background

  • Bachelor of Arts, Princeton University, 1973
  • Master of Arts, New York University, 1989

Carter McAdams - began dancing under the direction of Ze'eva Cohen at Princeton University, and upon graduating became a member of the Fairmount Dance Theater in Cleveland (‘73-76). While there he began an association with the choreographer and teacher Bill Evans, dancing in many of his works and teaching his technique and repertory at the Harvard Summer Dance Center (1975-76), and in Seattle (1978). Carter was a member of both the Elizabeth Keen Dance Co and the Beverly Brown Dancensemble in NYC ('76-'78) and toured internationally with the Nikolais Dance Theatre ('78-'82). He met Nusha Martynuk in NYC in 1978 and was her choreographic and performance partner for decades–they co-directed a company (Partners: Martynuk/McAdams Dance) and were awarded a NEA Choreographic Fellowship in 1987. He received an M.A. from New York University in 1989. Carter and Nusha were artists-in-residence at Trinity College in Hartford for six years before coming to Oberlin to share a faculty position in 1988. For fifteen years they were invited to work in different communities as part of the Ohio Arts Council’s Arts-in-Education program. Carter has a keen interest in computer & video work as part of dance and enjoys collaborating with colleagues in Oberlin's Conservatory.

Mr. McAdams teaches different levels of modern dance technique, improvisation, collaborations, and a first-year seminar titled: Under the Banner of Science: the Crusade Against Evolution.
