Professor Deppman received a grant from the CSL in the 2004-2005 school year to teach a First Year Seminar called Death and the Art of Dying . In this course, students worked to answer questions often raised by the notion of death: questions of readiness, the notion of dying well, and the idea of death shaping the way we live are all common concepts that arise in the discussion of death and dying. Through an examination of various works of fiction, poetry, philosophy, music, and visual art, students attempt to answer these questions. Students then have the opportunity to put these ideas into practice through a partnership with Kendal at Oberlin, a continuing-care retirement community in Oberlin. Professor Deppman emphasizes the importance of students using real people facing the realities of death and dying, as well as the overall importance of making lasting friendships as a primary resource for this course.
