Prof. An’s teaching and research interests include the French New Wave, documentary film, stardom, multi-media artistic practices, and French Orientalisms. They have been published in articles written on French cinematic encounters with East Asia since 1945, grouped under the term of a “Par-asian imaginary.” “Par-asian” is a term used to describe the types of relationships that filmmakers and writers such as Marguerite Duras, Alain Resnais, Chris Marker, and Olivier Assayas explored between France and Asia, as well as to characterize moments of French self-critique that have been undertaken “par l’Asie,” or through Asia. These articles have appeared in journals such as Contemporary French/Francophone Studies (SITES), Contemporary French Civilization, as well as in the edited volume Chinese Connections: Critical Perspectives on Film, Identity, and Diaspora. Prof. An is currently at work on a new research project: stardom and aging in French cinema.
