Educational Background

  • Bachelor of Science, Temple University, 1974
  • Master of Education, Temple University, 1976

Choreographer Nusha Martynuk is a Professor of Dance and Associate Chair of Theatre and Dance at Oberlin College. She received her Masters degree in dance from Temple University, and performed with Zero Moving Company in Philadelphia, under the direction of Hellmut Gottschild. In New York City, Nusha went on to work as an independent dancer and choreographer with the CETA-funded Artists’ Project, and also toured internationally, dancing featured roles with the Nikolais Dance Theatre.

With her husband, Carter McAdams, she spent six years as Artist-in-Residence at Trinity College, Hartford; there they co-founded and directed their own dance company, Partners Dance. Nusha has been recognized for her choreographic work with awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, six Choreography Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council, and grants from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, Greater Hartford Arts Council, and others. She was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for Choreography in 1999. Through the Ohio Arts Council’s Artists in Education Program, she has done extensive work in the schools, performing lecture/demonstrations, and teaching dance residencies. One such residency blossomed into a three-year project at Oberlin’s Eastwood School with Carter McAdams and poet Lynn Powell, integrating dance and poetry. Nusha and Carter have two children, Renata and Andrian.

Professor Martynuk teaches 207: Improvisation, 222: Choreography, 305: Collaborative Investigations in Choreography and Composition, 303: Oberlin Dance Company, 307: Improvisational Performance, and 395: Special Topics in Choreography
