"The Oberlin Arts Intensive Semester" in collaboration with Cleveland Public Theater
This is an arts intensive semester of study at Oberlin in Fall 2012 followed by a full-time Winter Term project in January 2013, which culminates in performances of the work of both faculty and students at Cleveland Public Theater. The semester focuses on integrating the arts, learning about collaborative processes, and engaging in an ongoing community of like-minded peers towards the creation of original work.
Summary –
The Oberlin College/Cleveland Public Theater (OASIS) intensive is a semester of intensive study in the arts for a cohort of eighteen students from different arts disciplines who are interested in collaboration. Students will learn and create work together in a guided semester of inter-disciplinary courses combining cinema studies, dance, music, and theater. All eighteen students enroll for the same group of integrated courses during the Fall 2012 semester. (Specifics on page 2.) This intensive will give students a full semester of credits in the arts and combines the resources of the college, conservatory, and museum as well as the considerable resources of Cleveland Public Theater. Students will learn from/work with guest artists from Cleveland Public Theater (CPT) and five faculty artists. The semester culminates in a full-time, collaborative, creative Winter Term project in January 2013. Students and faculty will create and perform an original evening-length production with Raymond Bobgan, artistic director of CPT.
We devised a curriculum that requires students to work across disciplines broadly while working deeply in their particular art forms. Students will take courses in which they:
- critically examine how the foundational elements of time and space function within distinct
but related artistic traditions and media forms
- investigate the intersections of interdisciplinary work in the studio
- evaluate art works, which they encounter in theater and studio settings
- are asked to articulate and evolve their own creative ideas and create independent projects
- work with faculty on the creation of new works under the guidance of an artistic director
Faculty (for more information, contact any of these faculty) –
Rian Brown and Geoff Pingree -- Cinema Studies
Carter McAdams and Nusha Martynuk -- Dance
Tom Lopez -- TIMARA in the Conservatory
Guest Artists –
Raymond Bobgan, Artistic Director, Cleveland Public Theater
Chris Seibert, Education Director, Cleveland Public Theater
Their artistic collaborations in creating devised theater result in intelligent, provocative, and
beautiful works. Together, they created Cut to Pieces, a performance by Chris Seibert that includes video, sound design, movement, and text to create a one-woman theater piece with multiple characters. See: http://vimeo.com/18581076
The intensive – what classes and how many credits would students take?
Students take a full semester of 15 credits; all students take all the same classes together.
All students then participate in the Winter Term group project in January 2013.
---- See page 2 for course and WT details.
* Students who cannot take a full semester of credits in the program due to other requirements that they need to fulfill may choose to take only 10 credits in the intensive. Those credits must be taken in courses numbered 1 thru 3.
We will allow 18 students to register for this intensive; they will be chosen from majors in the arts. The selection process will be a written application, interview with faculty, and group audition. These will take place in early March 2012; details are listed in the OASIS Application Process sheet.
Courses taught especially for this program are these:
1. The semester begins and ends with two weeks of intensive classes and workshops with Raymond Bobgan and Chris Seibert. Their first two weeks lay the groundwork for the collaborative nature of this project. The final two weeks focus on looking at the work created during the semester, defining what parts will be used in the big project to be done during winter term, and honing those parts to create the beginnings of a cohesive performance event. Every Friday during the semester everyone involved will gather in a studio to share and critique work and help develop the direction of what will become the WT project. This course blends creative work, evaluative discussion, written responses, and critical assessment; it will be overseen by Geoff Pingree, who will take on the role of bringing much of what happens in this and other parts of the intensive together. All faculty are involved.
(4 credits)
2. A nine-week interdisciplinary course on ‘space and time’ focusing on how those are central to each of our artistic disciplines: music, film/video, dance/performance. This is primarily a critical studies course. Instructors will be Tom Lopez, Carter McAdams, Rian Brown-Orso. (3 credits)
3. A course on collaboration; in this course students will experiment with different creative processes and models for collaborative composition and generate some of the creative work which will eventually be integrated into the winter term performance project. This is primarily a studio course.
It will be taught by Nusha Martynuk, Tom Lopez, and Rian Brown-Orso. (3 credits)
4. Students will work in private studio settings with individual faculty as they create works on a theme (to be determined); the resulting pieces will serve as cornerstones of the capstone project to be undertaken during winter term. This will be much like apprenticeships in different art forms; students work with the faculty member from their major area of study to create an original piece. This gives the faculty a chance to work together creatively and serves as a collaborative model for the students. The winter term project will ultimately be curated and overseen by Raymond Bobgan; students will continue to work on this evening-length project during Winter Term. Apprenticeship courses are offered by: Rian Brown-Orso (art/media), Tom Lopez (music), Nusha Martynuk (dance/performance). (3 credits)
5. Students will also see, discuss, and evaluate live performances and film/video screenings. Students will be bussed to Cleveland (especially CPT) and Columbus (the Wexner Center) to see theater, dance, and music performances, and video/film screenings. Carter McAdams will oversee this course; faculty will each choose two shows for students to see. All faculty are involved. (2 credits)
Winter Term
During Winter Term the students will live with sponsors in Cleveland and work in the CPT space with Raymond Bobgan to finish creating and installing the final piece, which will be fully produced and performed as part of the regular CPT season during Winter Term of 2013. (1 full winter term credit)
