Lucia Mad

Lucia Mad

Written by Don Nigro

Directed by Associate Professor Paul Moser

February 7, 8 & 9 at 8pm
February 9 at 2pm

Hall Auditorium, Oberlin College

Told with haunting lyricism and crackling wit, the story of James Joyce’s beloved daughter Lucia traces the imagined course of her doomed love for the young writer Samuel Beckett, while investigating the relationship between love, madness, and the act of artistic creation. Although he adores his beautiful and gifted daughter, Joyce is unable to give her the attention she craves, because he is obsessed with the composition of his last great work in progress. When his young disciple Beckett appears and Lucia falls madly in love with him, Beckett is torn between compassion for her, reverence for her father, and terror of her bottomless need for love. Lucia retains both a sharp eye and her wicked sense of humor as she slips deeper into madness… Vivid characters collide in this intensely comic play, rendered in rich language and resonant with an eccentric, melancholy beauty.
