A self-proclaimed poet of the theater, Miguel De Cervantes is in prison for heresy against the Spanish Inquisition, but it is his fellow prisoners that are putting him on trial. In his defense, he enlists them to help perform a play within the play as Cervantes assumes the role of Alonso Quijana. Alonso has read enough books about gallantry to embark on his own quest as the would-be-knight, the defender of chivalry: Don Quixote (the chaser of windmills). Author Dale Wasserman's 1964 play has long been considered a classic of American musical theater, now renewed on the Oberlin mainstage under Associate Professor Chris Flaharty’s direction. His production seats the audience on-stage in Hall Auditorium and features an unamplified ensemble cast of more characters than actors with guest artist Matthew Wright as Cervantes, Alonso, and Quixote. Running the gamut of hilarity and emotional depth, Man of La Mancha champions the power of storytelling to reveal what is essential about the spirit.
