Production Notes
Winona Brown and Sam Bergman’s duet, Retorno, examines the idea of co-dependency in an effort to “find endless ways that two bodies can work and fit together to create striking images and movement”. Further, they explore how such physical shapes and movements can develop into a vehicle for emotional connection between dancers.
Lisa Yanofsky has choreographed Controlled Anticipation, an energetic jazz quartet. The dance is set to a vocal musical number by Diana Krall. Yanofsky has developed her ideas into a dance that plays primarily with the way the dancers interact amongst one another and in relation to the audience.
Anahita Khosravi, a senior dance major, will showcase work from her senior dance project, Linked, a full-year choreographic investigation about identity and “how we can be viewed as individuals even when in a large group”. This first section explores the nature of conformity and the circumstances that cause one to conform. The work in its entirety will be presented in the spring. This piece is heavily collaborative, with the dancers contributing much material. It is set to original music by Isaac Jones, a junior TIMARA major.
Elaine Liu and Cristia Johnson offer Desiderium: An Exchange, a duet that combines traditional ballet and modern forms.
Hayley Larson performs Edges, a quirky solo “inspired by the ideas of discomfort and depersonalization”. From these themes, she created “movement that was both outside [her] comfort zone and outside the norm of what an audience expects to see”. Performed in silence, the solo makes uses of “body-made sound”.
Leslie Dworkin and Kent De Spain, a creative duo based out of Austin, Texas, are guest artists this year at Oberlin. Although they are known to have very unique artistic styles, Dworkin and De Spain are currently collaborating on a piece, entitled Cairn, to be performed by the Oberlin Dance Company. A previously created, full-length project, Cairn is inspired by the seasons as a state of both transition and renewal, and by the Japanese aesthetic principles of simplicity and impermanence. This septet, with live accompaniment improvised by percussion major Randall Chaves-Camacho, also explores the nature of ritual and the complex ramifications of being a member within a community.
