Vibrating Sample Magnetometer

Using Oberlin’s vibrating sample magnetometer, researchers are studying the alignment of iron oxide nanoparticles that are suspended in a solution to form magnetic fluids. Their results could hold the key to developing the next generation of computer memory storage, or to creating less invasive ways to kill cancer cells. “This is exciting because it’s real data,” says physics major Catherine Conlon ’09 of Orange County, California, who worked with Professor Yumi Ijiri on a study funded by the National Science Foundation. Whether detecting nanoparticles or observing objects in the night sky, Oberlin students find an extensive array of resources for expanding the frontiers of knowledge.
