This seminar will study recent American campaigns and elections, focusing on the 2012 Presidential and Congressional elections. These elections will allow us to think about current trends and developments in American democracy and electoral politics, including party identification, money and politics, ballot access and turnout, Presidential debates, and the role of media and advertising. Students will undertake several writing assignments analyzing the elections, participate in group projects, and track the elections closely. Sources will include political science and historic literature, media and film, and current news sources. Students in this seminar should share the instructor’s fascination with and enthusiasm for this important subject.
