Transfer Information

Transferring to Oberlin

The Conservatory encourages applications from transfer students, including graduates of two-year colleges. In addition to submitting all forms required of freshman applicants, transfer applicants must submit a confidential transfer report and official transcripts of all college work completed. They must also perform entrance auditions or, in the case of composition and electronic and computer music students, submit compositions, tapes, and other supporting materials. If an on campus audition or a regional audition is not possible, candidates may submit a video recording electronically through a company Oberlin Conservatory has built a relationship with a company called CitizenGroove. This online service provides a simple method for uploading recordings via the Oberlin Conservatory of Music Audition Dropbox.

A maximum of 62 credits in music and/or liberal arts (half of the 124 credits required for the B.Mus. degree) may be transferred. Transfer candidates are strongly urged to come to campus for a personal audition.

Transferring from the College of Arts and Sciences

Non-music course credits transfer at their full value from other accredited colleges and universities provided that a grade of C or better was received and the course falls within the scope of a liberal arts curriculum.

Students who wish to pursue topics outside of traditional courses, an important alternative is available in the Experimental College (ExCo). Founded in 1968, ExCo is a student-run organization that sponsors courses (for limited academic credit) taught Oberlin faculty, students, administrators, and residents. Rock climbing, performance swing, astrology, 16-mm film production, jump rope, bike mechanics, henna body art… you name it, ExCo may have a class about it.
