The Oberlin Conservatory of Music Announces the Winners of its 2011 Concerto Competition

Holly Jenkins, Beomjae Kim, Nathan Lesser, and Daniel Walden are the winners of Oberlin Conservatory's 2011 Concerto Competition. They will perform their winning repertoire in free, public concerts with Oberlin's orchestras this season, conducted by Raphael Jiménez.

Oberlin Opera Theater presents William Bolcom’s "A Wedding," based on Robert Altman’s 1978 film. The two-act opera features a hilarious depiction of two dysfunctional families during a young couple’s wedding. The production opens on Wednesday, November 16, at 8 p.m. in Hall Auditorium, with additional performances on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students; $8 for seniors and Oberlin College faculty, staff, and alumni; and $12 for the general public.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Oberlin College Italian, French, and History departments, in partnership with the Consul of Italy in Detroit and John Zaretti, President of the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan, will host two free events on September 23, 2011, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The presentations will also focus on the development of opera in America and feature performances from conservatory voice students.

Sirena Huang, a 17-year-old violinist from South Windsor, Connecticut, is the first-prize winner of the 2011 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition. Her stellar performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, with Jahja Ling conducting The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall on Friday, August 19, brought her the top prize of $10,000, one of the largest awards offered by an international youth competition. The prize includes concert engagements with orchestras in Beijing and Shanghai, China, and a full, four-year scholarship to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

The top three finalists of the 2011 Cooper International Violin Competition have been selected to advance to the concerto finals round with The Cleveland Orchestra on Friday, August 19. Sirena Huang, 17, from South Windsor, Connecticut; Laura Park, 17, from Des Plaines, Illinois; and Alexandra Switala, 17, from Grapevine, Texas, were chosen Wednesday, August 17, at the conclusion of the competition’s recital finals round at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. After nearly a week of intense competition among an original pool of 24 young violinists, the three finalists will perform their full concerti Friday night with The Cleveland Orchestra, Jahja Ling conducting. The inaugural Music in America conference took place at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music on July 8 to July 10, 2011. The event brought together leading music educators, students, conservatory faculty and administrators, and national arts advocates (including author and musician James McBride OC ’79) to explore and discuss fundamental teaching philosophies and strategies that result in highly successful public music education programs in underserved communities. The conference launched Music in America at Oberlin (MIAO), the conservatory’s new initiative to support and establish bold and transformative music programs in all communities throughout the United States, with a specific focus on underserved school districts.
