Ann Karp '01
ann karpI studied abroad in Nicaragua and Cuba as part of my major in Latin American Studies, which I finished in December 2001. After graduating, I joined the Lutheran Volunteer Corps (and received Americorps credit) for the 2002-2003 year. I worked with the Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota as a refugee resettlement caseworker, helping families from around the world (but primarily Africa) find housing, medical care, schooling, English classes, and much more in their new home city. I also helped refugees to apply for “green cards” and to problem-solve other documentation issues. After finishing this position, I moved to Koinonia Farm in Americus, Georgia (www.koinoniapartners.org). This faith-based intentional community was part of the vanguard of the civil rights movement, is the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity International, and is now home to several outreach projects, including affordable home repair, elder and youth programs, and hospitality to visitors. My work at Koinonia varies immensely, but centers around hospitality. I coordinate an intern program, give tours, do artwork, serve as content editor for our website, cook vegetarian community meals, and do whatever else needs doing! I also serve on the Board of Directors both at Koinonia and the Smithville Neighborhood Freedom Center, a grassroots, antiracist community organization in neighboring Smithville, GA.
