The votes have been cast, and Robin Eubanks is a winner.
Thus spake the readers of DownBeat magazine, who named Oberlin’s associate professor of jazz trombone the number one jazz trombone player for 2009. This is the 74th year that the magazine has been taking the temperature of its readers, who cast their opinions in categories that include individual artists, jazz groups, and recordings. There were 12 trombonists in Eubanks’ category, which included such artists as Slide Hampton and Delfeayo Marsalis.
Whether he is performing with his own groups, EB3 or Mental Images, or with the acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band (of which he is an original member), Eubanks is a musician whose impact on audiences has been powerful and lasting. He has won the magazine’s international critics’ poll five times, but this is his first award from the readers, which makes it a particularly sweet honor for the Grammy-winning artist.
“I want to thank DownBeat’s readers for the acknowledgement, and I hope to see and meet them as I travel and tour this year,” says Eubanks.
Eubanks’ other accolades include a grant from Chamber Music America for the creation and presentation of new works for a jazz ensemble and a 2002 ASCAP/ International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) commission to compose a piece that premiered at the January 2003 IAJE conference in Toronto. Eubanks shared a 2003 Grammy Award with the 14 other members of the Michael Brecker Quindectet for Wide Angles. As a member of the Dave Holland Big Band, he and his fellow band members shared a 2002 Grammy Award for their release What Goes Around.
Eubanks, a member of the Oberlin faculty since 1998, can also be heard on Beauty Surrounds Us, an Oberlin Music release featuring works written and performed by members of Oberlin’s jazz studies faculty.
