Winter Term Project Takes Terry Hsieh Collective to China for Second Tour
Jan. 13, 2011
The Terry Hsieh Collective
The Terry Hsieh Collective (THC) is led by trombonist Terry Hsieh, a senior double-degree student in the Jazz and East Asian Studies program. He also serves as President of the Oberlin Chapter of Global China Connect. Other sextet members include: Will Miller, trumpet; Cory Rogers, drums; Julie Chen, piano; Alex Cummings, saxophone; Brandon Gaoiran, double bass.
For the past few months, Hsieh has been raising funds to support the sextet’s second tour of China. Last winter term, he and five other music students traveled to Beijing for five weeks, where they performed at many of the local venues. They also taught several master classes to high school and middle school-aged musicians.
This winter, after receiving support in the form of the $6,000 CIGSIE grant and several smaller grants from the Study Away and Winter Term Committees, THC has made its second trip. Their primary goal this time is to engage young local Chinese musicians in jazz music to help support and expand the emerging jazz scene. While on tour, THC will be working closely with the Oberlin admissions office as well, in an effort to recruit young high school students into Oberlin's Jazz program.
