Ten Violinists Advance to the Concerto Round of the 2011 Cooper International Violin Competition

Ten of the world's most promising violinists advance to the Concerto Round of the 2011 Cooper International Violin Competition. They are, in alphabetical order: Ania Filochowska, from Poland; Brandon Garbot, from Portland, OR; Gergana Haralampieva, from Bulgaria; Sirena Huang, from South Windsor, Conn.; Mayumi Kanagawa, from Japan; Stephen Kim, from Cupertino, CA; Laura Park, from Des Plaines, IL; Alexandra Switala, from Grapevine, TX; Kelly Talim, from Japan; and Zhu Ke, from China.

The aspiring artists, accompanied by piano, will perform concerti from composers including Prokofiev, Paganini, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Sibelius, Dvoƙák, Shostakovich, and Wieniawski. The Concerto Round will be held on Tuesday, August 16, at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in Warner Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music; the event is free and open to the public. Six competitors will emerge from the Concerto Round to perform in the Recital Finals Round on Wednesday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Warner Hall. Three finalists from that round will advance to the Concerto Finals Round in Severance Hall on Friday, August 19 at 8:00 p.m. where they will perform their full concerti with The Cleveland Orchestra, Jahja Ling conducting.
