Learn MoreShould We Teach Handwriting in the Digital Age? (The Huffington Post)
July 21, 2011
Should schools continue to teach handwriting in the digital age? I asked just this question in a segment forBody, Mind and Child, my show on BAM Radio Network, and was surprised to discover that none of the three panelists felt as strongly as I did about maintaining the tradition. Anne Trubek, an associate professor of rhetoric and composition at Oberlin College, was outspoken in her view that we do away with handwriting instruction. She stated: We have these larger cultural connections to handwriting as a sense of identify and self-expression. It has to be put into the context of nostalgia and history and separated from educational goals.

Learn MoreDon’t overschedule kids in the summer (The Washington Post)
July 18, 2011
Compounding the problem is that many youngsters don’t quite know what to do with an unscheduled afternoon — or week. “Kids today have almost no free time during the school year, and then, all of a sudden during the summer they may have 14 hours a day to fill, which is a big jump,” says Nancy Darling, a professor of psychology at Ohio’s Oberlin College who studies parent-child relationships. She notes potential negative consequences to all that unscheduled time, such as a well-documented rise in underage drinking, marijuana use and smoking during the summer months.

Learn MoreAllison Swaim sets off for a year at sea (Salisbury Post)
July 17, 2011
Allison Swaim of Salisbury has done that — and can speak quite knowledgeably about how bulk ore is transported, how huge cargo freighters are still the most efficient way to transport bulk material, and how more than 100 million tons of iron ore, coal and limestone travel through the Great Lakes navigation system every year by boat. Allison produced a radio documentary about her experience, which was only the first step toward a much larger project she’s embarking on now. Allison, who graduated from Salisbury High School in 2006, finished her degree at Oberlin College in December with a major in comparative American studies.

Learn MoreMOCA shows off dreamy images in 'Delicious Fields: Ohio Photographers at Work' (The Plain Dealer)
July 16, 2011
Pipo Nguyen-Duy, for example, a native of Vietnam who teaches at Oberlin College, is represented by pictures of horribly maimed Vietnamese men and of abandoned greenhouses choked by weeds and vines. Nguyen-Duy's images combine stark beauty with a pathos made all the more intense by the photographer's calmness and restraint. They also appear to strive for a sense of universality rather than connection to a particular place. If there's an Ohio-ness to the show, it comes from a certain sense of spaciousness or light, or perhaps the strong presence of the horizon. But the same could be said of photographs taken in, say, Oklahoma or Nebraska.
