Apollo Hosts Ann Arbor Film Festival

Mar 08, 2013

OBERLIN, OH—Oberlin’s historic Apollo Theatre will be host to 15 independent short films from the Ann Arbor Film Festival on Tuesday, March 12, and Wednesday, March 13.

Established in 1963, the annual Ann Arbor Film Festival (AAFF) is the longest-running independent and experimental film festival in North America. The AAFF is a pioneer of the traveling film festival tour, and each year presents short film programs at more than 35 cinematheques, colleges and universities, museums, and artist-run centers in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Rian Brown-Orso, associate professor of new media and cinema, says the Apollo’s showing of AAFF films presents a rare opportunity to see contemporary short films outside of a traditional film festival context.

All films will be shown in the Burrows Theater of the Apollo. Tickets are $3 with an Oberlin College ID and $5 for the general public. The schedule includes two evening-length programs of acclaimed independent films.

Both programs begin at 9:30 p.m. and include the following:

Tuesday, March 12

  • Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke (Jillian Mayer)
  • Ricky (Janie Geiser)
  • Taxonomy (Karen Aqua)
  • The Sea [Is Still] Around Us (Hope Tucker)
  • Guañape Sur (János Richter)
  • The Deep Dark (Laura Heit)
  • Birdboy (Alberto Vazquez, Pedro Rivero)

Wednesday, March 13

  • Moxie (Stephen Irwin)
  • 20 Hz (Semiconductor)
  • Visitation (Suzan Pitt)
  • Sounding Glass (Sylvia Schedelbauer)
  • Tin Pressed (Dani Leventhal)
  • Untitled (Neil Beloufa)
  • Lack of Evidence (Hayoun KWON)
  • Ceibas: Epilogue - The Well of Representation (Evan Meaney)

The Apollo Theatre, which reopened in September following a renovation to restore its historic features, is operated and managed by Cleveland Cinemas.
