This year marks the 170th anniversary of your alumni association, which 24 Oberlin graduates founded in 1839 (the Class of 1837 was the first graduating class). The Association of Alumni of the Oberlin Collegiate Institute was one of the first academic alumni associations in the country.

Obama Nominates Krislov for NEH Advisory Council Post
President Barack Obama has nominated Marvin Krislov to be a member of the National Council on the Humanities. If appointed, he will continue to serve as president of Oberlin College. Several alumni presently serve in the Obama administration, and more are awaiting confirmation.

Conservatory, Cleveland Orchestra Launch New International Competition
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Orchestra recently announced a new partnership that will enhance educational opportunities for pianists and violinists between the ages of 13 and 18. More than $20,000 in prize money and a performance with the Cleveland Orchestra will be awarded.

Convocation Series 2009-10
The Oberlin Convocation Series, presented under the auspices of the Finney Lecture Committee and the Office of the President, presents free, public discussions of cutting-edge issues by some of the country’s most prominent thinkers. This year’s speakers include Shirin Ebadi, a lawyer, human rights activist, and 2003 Nobel Peace Prize recipient; Robert Kuttner ’65, a political and economics writer and cofounder and coeditor of The American Prospect; and actor and comedian Ed Helms ’96.

Alumni Volunteer Spotlight: Ellen Hertzman ’85, Regional Coordinator
Alumni volunteers are essential to Oberlin outreach because their community efforts help keep Obies connected to Oberlin and each other. ATS wants to celebrate the work of these volunteers through this new spotlight section. In this issue we recognize Ellen Hertzman ’85. As regional coordinator for the Oberlin Club of Colorado, Hertzman has coordinated snowshoeing, hiking, concerts, Obie author readings, and a host of other events in her effort to help keep alumni connected to each other and the college.
