SOMOS OBIES: The Few, the Proud, the Oberlin Latinos!

Estimado/a Amigo/as:

The Oberlin Latino Alumni Association’s reunion weekend, SOMOS OBIES: The Few, the Proud, the Oberlin Latinos!, took place October 7-9, 2011.

As a result of our big dreams and hard work, we had a weekend full of events and enough downtime to allow you to get reacquainted with Oberlin. On Friday, October 7, we welcomed you on the Kohl Building for Jazz Studies’ outdoor patio. Immediately following this gathering, we had the welcoming reception and dinner. Joining us were the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory. We also presented the OLAA Distinguished Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award.

On Saturday, October 8, we had a day of workshops planned for you. Distinguished alumni generously volunteered their time and expertise during the reunion to join us. We began the day with a panel discussion, "Educating Latinos in the 21st Century: Challenges and Innovations."  Over lunch we heard from current students, and we ended the afternoon with a panel discussion on “My Oberlin Education," and reflected on how the Oberlin experience inspires and influences our life journeys. We encouraged alumni to take in the Latino Archive Exhibit or be filmed for the Latino Oral History Project. (If you have artifacts from your time at Oberlin that you would like to have included in the Latino Archive Exhibit, please contact Ken Grossi, the college archivist, who is looking forward to your contributions. You can reach him directly at ken.grossi@oberlin.edu or 440-775-8014).

Saturday night’s dinner included our keynote speaker for the Latino Alumni Reunion: Thomas Saenz, President of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) – http://maldef.org/about/thomas_a_saenz.

Sunday, our reunion concluded with a brunch featuring President Marvin Krislov. As always, you can stay connected on the OLAA Facebook group page.

Les saluda atentamente,

José W. Meléndez ’01 OLAA Chair
