We are pleased to announce we have retired the OBIEWeb online directory and replaced it with the TAPPAN Network.
The TAPPAN Network is an online directory and record updating system available for alumni, students, staff, and faculty of Oberlin College. Users can update their contact information to ensure delivery of the Oberlin Alumni Magazine and e-mails about Oberlin news and events. Students will be able to make connections with alumni who can offer advice about careers or Winter Term opportunities. Alumni will be able to connect with friends and find people they may have lost touch with via enhanced search features.
The TAPPAN Network can be found at http://alumni.oberlin.edu. There are five steps outlined below to help you get started with the new platform. Logo by Colin Koffel ’08.
Step 1: Register for the TAPPAN Network
Users of the TAPPAN Network will need to create new usernames and passwords. The process should take only a moment by following these steps:
- Click here to go to the TAPPAN Network registration page.
- Enter your last name, your ID number, and your class year. You can find your ID number above your name on the address label of the Oberlin Alumni Magazine. You can also contact our office to receive your number.
- Create a username and password.
After completing these steps you will be registered for the TAPPAN Network. If you encounter any problems with registration, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 2: Update Your Profile
Click on My Profile on the left menu to open your profile options.
Edit My Profile will let you see all your information we have on file. You can edit the individual sections of your profile, including adding information about your family, activities from your days at Oberlin, and letting us know your preferred contact methods. The checkboxes in each section will allow you to hide information from public view.
View Public Profile will allow you to look at how others will see your profile.
Step 3: Search for Classmates
There are two search methods available in the Directory menu:
- Basic: Search by name, class year, or range of class years.
- Advanced: Search by geography, academic background, Oberlin activities and dorms.
You can save searches for future reference and bookmark profiles by adding users to your Friends List. If you spot an error in another user's profile, there is a link available for contacting our office so we can update information. You can also contact a user directly from their profile.
Step 4: Post a Class Note
Letting your fellow alumni know what you have been up to is now easier to do. Notes are submitted using a single form, including customizable text and urls. You can also receive notifications of new class notes with subscriptions. Subscriptions can be based on class year, major, topic, and if a user is part of your Friends List. Notes are also searchable and can be submitted to the Oberlin Alumni Magazine.
Step 5: Become a Career Advisor
One of the new features available in the TAPPAN Network is the Career Connection Advisor Network. This allows users to create a more robust career profile to facilitate networking with alumni and connecting with current students. Oberlin alumni can play a major role in helping students and fellow alumni achieve their career goals.
Access Scholarly Journals JSTOR and Project Muse
Oberlin alumni can continue to access the full text of more than 1,300 journals at JSTOR and hundreds of journals and eBooks at Project MUSE. Scholarly journal and eBook access sponsored by the Friends of the Oberlin College Library, the Oberlin College Library, and the Oberlin Alumni Association.
More Services on the Way
We are not done building the TAPPAN Network—there are several new modules which we will be rolling out in the coming months. We also want to hear your feedback on what is currently available, particularly if parts of the site are not functioning as you would expect. Please share your thoughts with us by emailing email@example.com or by phone at (440) 775-8692.
We would not have been able to launch the TAPPAN Network without the assistance of our beta testing team. Thank you for volunteering!
