2017 Alumni Trustee Election

Oberlin is unusual among liberal arts colleges in that six of the 29 to 37 seats on its Board of Trustees are filled through direct election by alumni. Alumni have a unique opportunity to elect trustees who will join a Board that is mindful of the traditions and heritage of the institution and whose current members take their important fiduciary responsibilities very seriously. The alumni trustee elected this spring will serve a four-year term starting July 1, 2017.

One trustee is elected by alumni each year. All Oberlin graduates are eligible to cast a vote for an alumni-elected trustee, a tradition that dates back to 1878. A vote for one of the candidates is an affirmation of the Oberlin tradition and confirmation of your support for Oberlin. It costs nothing, but has immense value.

Even if you believe both candidates are qualified for a position on the Board of Trustees and will serve Oberlin College well in the coming years, please take the time to review their credentials and vote. Your vote counts!

Results will be certified by the Board of Trustees at their June 2017 meeting, with the winner announced in the July issue of Around the Square.

Voting Procedures

Any person upon whom the college has conferred a degree is eligible to participate in this election. Eligible voters may download and print a paper ballot.

All eligible voters for whom Oberlin College has an e-mail address will also be sent an electronic ballot. The e-mail will include a personalized url specifically for each user, and will allow the user to vote without needing to log in or register for a website. Electronic votes will be processed and counted by Qualtrics, the world's leading insight technology provider. Qualtrics is used by the sciences and institutional research at Oberlin College. We believe their experience and integrity merit your trust. 

To accommodate this new online voting process, we are sending invitations and reminders in waves. The first wave of e-mails will be sent February 6-February 22. The second wave will take place March 8-22. If you have not received a ballot or have trouble voting, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@oberlin.edu. Please include your first name, last name, and class year.

To be counted, your ballot must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. EDT, Monday, April 3, 2017.

The Board of Canvassers (the Secretary of the College and the Director of Libraries) certifies the results of the election. Of the two candidates, the one receiving the most votes will be declared elected for a full term of four years beginning July 1, 2017. The two candidates on the ballot have been selected in accordance with Article I, Section 4, of the Bylaws of Oberlin College. The Trustee Search Committee of the Oberlin Alumni Association certifies that each candidate has agreed to serve if elected.
