Practice

Once a student has been accepted for study, regular practice is expected. For the beginning student, 30 minutes a day, six days a week is encouraged. The length of practice should increase as the student advances.

Please allow adequate time for prompt arrival to your lesson. Time will not be taken from the following lesson to accommodate late arrivals.

Lesson assignments are expected to be completed each week. A good, well-maintained instrument at home is necessary to facilitate learning.

Parents are encouraged to become involved in their child’s musical education. Parents should help the student in their practicing at home and may sit in on the lesson at the discretion of the teacher.

Attendance and Rescheduling

Please give 24 hours notice if you must reschedule a lesson. Students must call their instructor to ensure rescheduling.

In addition the following will be true:

  1. Lessons missed by the instructor will be made up within the semester.
  2. Lessons missed by the student without 24 hours notice will NOT be made up.
  3. Tuition fees will not be prorated for missed lessons.
  4. If a student knows she/he is going to miss more than two lessons per semester, the student will need to fill out a leave-of-absence form.
  5. Students on scholarship may miss no more than two lessons per semester. If more than two lessons are missed, the student is at risk of losing their scholarship. Extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration.
  6. Only one excused absence is required to be made up.

Snow Days

Although Oberlin College rarely closes because of weather conditions, Community Music School teachers may cancel lessons for inclement weather, especially if the Oberlin Public Schools or any nearby public or private schools close. We will contact parents if lessons are cancelled due to weather, or they may contact the Community Music School office if weather conditions will not allow for safe travel to Oberlin. Lessons cancelled due to weather will be rescheduled.
