Program Houses

As part of Residential Education and Dining Services' effort to provide unique and individual housing experiences, ten Program Houses are arranged across campus and cover a variety of interests. Four houses focus on the languages of French, German, Russian and Spanish. A variety of personnel live in the houses with the students including Faculty-in-Residence, Teaching Assistants (usually overseas from the hall's designated country), and Resident Assistants who are fluent in the house's language. The four language halls provide wonderful support in the learning and practicing of the house language as well as opportunities to learn about the culture of the home country.

One of the houses is our Substance Free program house for those who are committed to live in an environment that supports their choice to limit their exposure to alcohol and other drugs while avoiding the second-hand effects of peer habits.

The other five Program Houses have focuses on various cultural backgrounds. Oberlin offers the Afrikan Heritage House, Asia House, Hebrew Heritage House, Third World House, and the Women's Collective. The personnel in these houses help students learn and celebrate the houses' mission. The five cultural houses also serve as a support system for students who identify with the houses' cultural background.

Placement in any of the Program Houses is by specific application only. Residential Education and Dining Services encourages anyone with an interest to apply! (must log in using Obie ID and password)
