Appointed as Chief Human Resources Officer in 2015, Joseph Vitale, Jr. is responsible for leading the Department of Human Resources in its mission of attracting, retaining and developing a community of talented and diverse individuals in support of the College's mission and to meet the institutions strategic goals.

The department partners with institutional leaders to attract and retain talented faculty and staff to Oberlin College and Conservatory. HR continues to focus upon contributing towards a welcoming, affirming, and empowering culture of respect and inclusion. The department strives to serve as a consultant, partner, and advisor to all departments on a wide range of compliance and non-compliance HR-related issues; facilitate professional development of employees; and promote effective employee communication throughout the Oberlin College community.

HR is comprised of the offices of Benefits & Compensation, Employee & Labor Relations, Talent Acquisition & Employment, Environmental Health & Safety, and Payroll.


Joseph Vitale, Jr. holds over 20 years of human resources experience. He served as a Vice President for Human Resources within higher education and was managing partner of an executive search firm. Among other positions, he served as an elected official in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, and early in his career, worked as a deputy finance director for U.S. Sen. John Glenn.

Joe holds a B.A. in Social and Behavioral Sciences from The Ohio State University and a M.P.A. from UoP. He is a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and a Certified Diversity Recruiter (CDR).
