Insurance Information
All full time students enrolled at Oberlin College receive an annual letter in July with health insurance policy information. Students are automatically billed for the Student Insurance Program offered by Academic Health Plans, Inc. The premium cost is included on the 2011 fall term bill. It can be refunded if the policy is waived by the waiver deadline of September 15, 2011. No adjustments can be made to the student's account after that date. In order to waive the Student Insurance Program offered by Academic Health Plans, the student must have comparable policy coverage that provides benefits to Providers in Oberlin, Ohio. You will need to consult your private insurance company for these details. The online waiver form is available on the Academic Health Plans website @www.ahpcare.com/oberlin. The waiver form must be completed each year. You will be submitting your private health insurance information when you waive and it will be kept in a secure server. All international students are required to purchase the student health insurance plan. In addition to contacting Academic Health Plans via its website, you can reach the plan by phone at 1-888-308-7320. Complete student health insurance plan information is available at either venue. All full time students enrolled at Oberlin College, regardless of insurance coverage, can be seen at Student Health Services. If you have a question about Academic Health Plans, complete information is available online at the Academic Health Plans website.
The providers at Oberlin College Student Health Services want your medical care and treatment to be appropriate and efficient. *Most services are provided free of charge. However, there are times when further diagnostic testing or treatment may be recommended. Payment for these services which are provided elsewhere are to be handled by your insurance company.
Insurance companies don’t often pay 100 percent of a bill. You may be required to reach a deductible (a certain dollar amount paid out of pocket) before your insurance company will pay. You may also have a copay, which is a set amount you pay out of pocket per visit. You will not be charged a copay for visiting Student Health, but you may be expected to pay a copay at a private physician’s office or the Emergency Department.
Usually there is a set amount that your insurance company will pay for a service. If the provider (doctor’s office or hospital) is not a “preferred provider” on your plan, you may be billed for difference between the amount that is billed and the amount your insurance company will pay. If you ensure that the provider is a “preferred provider” or “on your plan” then you should not be billed for this difference unless you reached the insurance plans' limits in policy for services rendered.
