Academics
The presence of a liberal arts college and a conservatory of music on one campus is rare and enriching. The College of Arts and Sciences offers a rich and balanced curriculum in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences. The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music offers flexible programs that prepare students as professional musicians and teachers of music. Oberlin's distinctive, five-year, Double-Degree Program leads to baccalaureate degrees both in the arts and music. Oberlin's varied resources and programs help students succeed in their intellectual, social, and overall personal development. The academic and support services include academic advising, counseling and wellness, learning assistance, and focused services for first generation, underrepresented, low-income, international, and special-needs students.
Each Oberlin student has an academic advisor to help plan an educational program consonant with his or her interests and goals. The advisor assists in evaluating academic strengths and weaknesses and provides information on Oberlin's curriculum and regulations. A performance major's advisor is usually his or her principal private study teacher.
Students have many opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom. Recreational and varsity sports, sanctioned and informal student organizations and clubs, government and community service activities, fellowships and internships, and musical ensembles and performance groups help ensure students have a well-rounded college experience.
In addition, Oberlin encourages all students, regardless of major, to broaden their liberal arts experience through such curricular and service activities as study away programs that provide cultural immersion, high academic standards and intensive language programs; winter term, where students explore topics and experiences outside of regular courses; Experimental College or ExCo, a student-run program offering one-credit courses on most any subject; and First-Year Seminar, which introduces first-year students to liberal arts learning.
Oberlin's Allen Memorial Art Museum is one of the top five museums on any college campus in the country, and the Oberlin College Library, noted for its depth and range of traditional and online resources, includes the Main Library and three branch libraries devoted to music, science, and art.
