Transfer of Credit

Transfer of Credit

While Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit is granted automatically based on the appropriate exam score (these details are outlined in the catalog), transfer credit from courses taken at other 4-year colleges and universities must be approved on a case-by-case basis. It is highly advisable for students to secure pre approval for courses they plan to transfer for Oberlin chemistry credit, so that there is a guarantee that the courses are appropriate.

PLEASE NOTE: Credit from a 2 year college is not accepted. To see a list of ACS approved schools please visit the ACS site.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry uses the following procedure:

1) The student downloads and prints out both the Departmental and the Registrar's Office transfer credit forms (links given below):

Department Form
Registrar's Office Form

2) The student gains approval from the appropriate Departmental faculty member (depending on the course for which transfer credit is being sought).

If the student is interested in transferring credit that is equivalent to Oberlin's Chemistry 101 and/or Chemistry 102 course(s), he/she contacts Professor Mehta to make an appointment to discuss the appropriateness of the proposed course.

If the student is interested in transferring credit that is equivalent to Oberlin's Chemistry 205 course, he/she contacts Professor Matlin to make an appointment to discuss the appropriateness of the proposed course.

The student brings information about the proposed course to the meeting, as well as both transfer credit forms.

3) After approval by either Professor Mehta or Professor Matlin the student drops off both forms at the Departmental office for final approval by the chair.

4) The student is informed via email when the chair has given final approval, and the Registrar's Office form is then picked up from the Departmental office.

5) The student turns in the registrar's form to the Registrar's Office.
