Visiting Assistant Professor

Carlos Chiapa (Ph.D., 2008, Boston University) is interested in applied microeconomics, development economics, and program evaluation. Most of his research has focused on studying the Mexican antipoverty program PROGRESA/Oportunidades. His current research focuses the effects of sex-imbalances caused by migration from Mexico to the U.S. on crime in Mexico; the effects of giving access to savings accounts to beneficiaries of antipoverty programs; and testing the schooling repayment hypothesis for private transfers. In 2010, he was awarded Mexico's National Víctor L. Urquidi and Banamex Prizes in Economics for his research on aspirations.
