Winter Term 2012: Oberlin Business Scholars find their calling on Wall Street

For four weeks in January, a select group of students from different majors with little to no business experience connected with accomplished alumni in Cleveland, New York, and Boston. The Oberlin Business Scholars Program is an intensive winter-term program that provides a foundation of skills, knowledge, and contacts to compete for internships in the fields of finance, consulting, and advertising and public relations.

Winter Term 2012: Students travel to Nicaragua in solidarity with local women farmers

A delegation of five Oberlin students traveled to Nicaragua this January to work with local cooperative organizations. The winter-term trip was one of a series of biannual trips organized by the Nicaragua Sister Partnership, a joint venture between the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association (OSCA), and Nicaragua’s National Union of Agriculturalists and Ranchers (UNAG).

Professor Steve Volk Receives Commendation from Ohio House of Representatives

Representative Dan Ramos and the Ohio House of Representatives presented Professor of History Steve Volk with House Resolution 244, honoring him as the 2011 Outstanding Baccalaureate Colleges U.S. Professor of the Year. CASE and the Carnegie Foundation Advancement of Teaching selected Volk for the award, which recognizes him for excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

Operatic Legend Marilyn Horne To Present Master Classes February 24 and 26

Oberlin ranks third among small colleges for Peace Corps volunteers

For 12 consecutive years, Oberlin has placed high on the Peace Corps’ list of top schools nationwide producing volunteers. This year, the college made a big leap, moving up to the No. 3 spot among small colleges and universities, with 24 alumni currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers. Oberlin’s representation is up from last year’s No. 18 ranking with 17 volunteers in service.

Winter Term 2012: "Green" opera theater production uses iPads during rehearsal process

Directed by Assistant Director of Opera Theater Productions Victoria Vaughan, the Orpheus Project uses excerpts from Monteverdi, Gluck, and Milhaud to retell the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, a Greek myth about a young musician who attempts to rescue his lover from the Underworld. All the members of the cast have iPads rather than traditional paper scores, which they use to read and annotate their music during rehearsals.

Oberlin Conservatory Announces Rubin Institute Prize Winners

The conservatory announced the recipients of the two prizes of the Stephen and Cynthia Rubin Institute for Music Criticism during the closing ceremonies on Sunday, January 22. Oberlin senior Jacob Street won the $10,000 Rubin Prize in Music Criticism. Samantha London of Baltimore won the $1,000 Public Review Prize for her review of pianist Jeremy Denk’s concert.
