Sophomore Brings Chapter of Nonprofit Organization to Campus Having found a passion for activism and women’s issues when she was in middle school, sophomore Sophie Ottoni-Wilhelm hopes to share that focus with her Oberlin peers through an on-campus chapter of the New Community Project, a small nonprofit for which she serves on the board.

Novelist Tracy Chevalier ’84 to Deliver Commencement Address Oberlin’s 2013 Commencement/Reunion Weekend activities will be May 24 to May 27. The 176th Commencement exercises will take place on Monday, May 27, on Tappan Square. This year’s Commencement speaker is novelist Tracy Chevalier ’84, author of the bestselling book Girl with a Pearl Earring (1999) and the just released The Last Runaway (2013). She also will receive an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts. The Baccalaureate speaker is Tarunjit Singh Butalia, current Secretary General of the World Sikh Council-America Region and the Moderator of Religions for Peace-USA.

Hamill will co-author a study of the role of photography in shaping modern conceptions of art and history.

Take 2: Beethoven's Complete Works for Cello with Piano Faculty pianist Peter Takács and guest cellist Robert deMaine present a series of two concerts embodying Beethoven's complete works for cello and piano. The concerts take place on April 14 and May 5, and are free; no tickets are required.

Senior Chemistry Student Wins Award for Research in Spectroscopy

Senior chemistry major Yihui Chen has been awarded the Ernest B. Yeager Award for research in spectroscopy. The award is given annually to one undergraduate in the northeast Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania region by the Cleveland section of the American Chemical Society.


Clarity on Student Senate Resolution

The Oberlin College Student Senate recently passed a resolution calling for the institution to divest holdings from six companies that they believe "profit from the occupation and oppression of Palestinians." Despite several reports to the contrary, in no way was it meant to represent the opinions or intentions of the institution, administration, board, or investment committee.

Kenyon College Picks Sean Decatur as its New President

Kenyon College, the liberal arts school in Gambier, Ohio, named Sean Decatur, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College, as its next president, effective July 1. Decatur, who will be Kenyon’s first black president, has spent most of his career at liberal arts schools.

Before the public radio show Radiolab became a cult hit, Jad Abumrad and his future co-host, NPR's Robert Krulwich, would meet up at a local diner and argue about scientific curiosities. Through a series of happy accidents, these debates became the basis for their hugely popular radio show. The son of a scientist and a doctor, Jad Abumrad studied creative writing and music composition at Oberlin College in Ohio.

Oberlin College researcher helps fight corrosion in historic pipe organs

Oberlin College chemistry professor and avid organist Catherine Oertel is part of an international research effort to confront the corrosion threat. Using sophisticated diagnostic tools, including X-rays and ion beams that probe the atomic structure of the decay, the small band of scientists has fingered an unexpected culprit for the damage.

In his debut espionage thriller, Erec Stebbins takes his James Bond-style novel to a new level where the world is both “shaken and stirred.” Stebbins spins a taut tale of international intrigue with a unique twist when the Islamic world is confronted with global annihilation through terrorism. Stebbins earned a degree in physics from Oberlin College in 1992 and a PhD in biochemistry at Cornell in 1999.
