Student Health Services

Student Health Services (SHS) provides primary care services to all full time students at Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music regardless of insurance coverage. Students may see a Physician, Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries as well as follow-up care as needed. We provide immunizations, allergy injections, men & women’s health services, physical exams, some diagnostic testing, procedures, basic laboratory services, a few medications, and medical supplies. SHS does not provide excuses for missed classes. Students are responsible for communicating with their professors about their illness.

We maintain a network of local experts who can offer additional speciality care as appropriate. We refer more complex services to specialists. The costs for referrals, more complex laboratory work, international immunizations, or x-rays are handled through the students' insurance provider or by the student.

You will find our office a short walk from the center of campus in the Professional Services Building, 247 W. Lorain St., Suite A.

Call for an appointment Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2-4:30 p.m., for any of the above health care needs at 440-775-8180. Same day walk-in hours for illness of brief encounters dealing with upper respiratory and urinary tract complaints, or new onset rashes are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Wednesday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., first come, first served. Registration is taken up to 12:30 p.m.

Students may receive a cold care kit without being seen. Just ask for one. You can also find cold care kits at Wilder Main Desk, the Main Library in Mudd Center, and from your resident assistant. Kindly let us know if the supply has diminished and we will provide a refill ASAP.

Student Health Insurance

Oberlin College 2014 Waiver Information

Oberlin College requires that all students maintain student health insurance coverage as a condition of enrollment. You may apply for a waiver if you already have coverage under an alternate health insurance plan that meets certain minimum requirements, meaning that is comparable to the Oberlin College health insurance plan. Travel plans or plans that require you to pay for treatment yourself and then apply for reimbursement will NOT be accepted for waiving the Oberlin College health insurance plan.

Waive process

  • You will need an electronic copy of your insurance card
  • The online waiver form is available at http://oberlin.myahpcare.com/waiver
  • Select the above link to access the waiver form
  • Select the "Waiver" tab and then the link "To Waive or Enroll”
  • Enter your Student ID as the username
  • Enter your birthdate as the password in the format MMDDYYYY(Example:01181998)
  • Select the waiver form under “Submit Waivers”
  • Complete the waiver form
  • Select the "Submit Waiver" button.

You must submit your request for waiver by September 15, 2014, to be considered. If you do not submit a waiver form, you will be enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan administered and coordinated by Academic Health Plans (AHP). Sending health forms to Student Health does not mean they have automatically waived the insurance. You must complete and file a waiver each year.

Enrollment Process

Students without health insurance must enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan. This plan offers students and their dependents an affordable, high quality health insurance plan. The college’s Student Health Services and the Counseling Center are free for all students regardless of whether they obtain student health insurance. Academic Health Plans (AHP) is the primary insurance for coverage and when coordinating benefits. Follow these instructions to apply for coverage through AHP:

  • Go to Oberlin.myahpcare.com
  • Select the "Enrollment" tab and then the link "To Waive or Enroll”
  • Enter your Student ID
  • Enter your birthdate as the password in the format MMDDYYYY (Example 01182007)
  • Select the "One Click Enroll" and initial the required box.

Academic Health Plans

Academic Health Plans (AHP) is the primary insurance for coverage and when coordinating benefits. If you have questions about the Student Health Insurance Plan, call AHP at 888-308-7320. The contact person for Oberlin College is Veronica Arredondo at Ext. 2121.

Visit the AHP website at Oberlin.myahpcare.com for FAQs, policy benefits, forms and general information. Once you have submitted your waiver form, you should receive a confirmation e-mail to confirm your waiver. The waiver form must be completed each year. The deadline is September 15, 2014 for the 2014-2015 academic year.

All full-time students enrolled at Oberlin College are automatically billed for the Student Health Insurance Program offered by AHP. The premium cost of $1,023 is included on the 2014 fall term bill. You can receive a refund if the policy is waived by the waiver deadline of September 15, 2014.

In order to waive the student health insurance offered by AHP, the student must have comparable policy coverage in the Oberlin general area. You will need to consult your private insurance company for these details.

Do not wait until the final day to waive the insurance as the line will be very busy. We require all international students to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan.
