Underground Railroad Sculpture

Underground Railroad Sculpture This environmental sculpture commemorates Oberlin as a major stop on the Underground Railroad, the secret route by which abolitionists helped slaves escape to freedom in the Civil War era. Cameron Armstrong (then a senior at Oberlin College) constructed the piece in 1977 as part of a class art project; the class of 1977 donated funds that enabled the College to preserve it as a permanent structure, located near Talcott Hall.
